Often a person has to make a decision pertaining to some aspect or the other. The more serious the matter, the more difficult it becomes to make the decision. According to the advice of the Quraan Majeed and hadeeth, such important decisions should never be made without prior consultation. Allah Ta‘ala declares in the Quraan Majeed regarding the Believers: “And their matters are (decided) with mutual consultation” (Surah Shura v38). Even Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was commanded by Allah Ta‘ala to consult the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) in such matters of importance wherein no divine instruction had been given.

Rising Costs

From the street sweeper to the industrialist, every person is alarmed by the increasing costs of basic commodities. In the world of cause and effect, many reasons for the rising costs are explained by all and sundry. Political instability, faction fighting, etc. are cited as reasons for the value of the rand falling sharply. This in turn resulted in the price of petrol rocketing. The high petrol price impacts negatively on the price of every commodity... and the story goes on and on.

While these apparent means are not denied, the fact of the matter however, is that they are only the APPARENT means. In reality, all conditions are created by Allah Ta‘ala alone. These conditions are also not brought about haphazardly. Allah Ta‘ala and His beloved Rasul (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) have informed us as to when favourable conditions will prevail, and also what will invite the wrath of Allah Ta‘ala due to which He will send down adverse conditions.

In one narration, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) is reported to have said: “When Allah Ta‘ala is ANGRY upon a nation, and He does not send down upon them the punishments of the earth swallowing them or the punishment of transfiguration of people into animals, He causes the prices of commodities to rise high, the rains are withheld from them and the worst of the people are caused to rule over them”. (Faidhul Qadeer vol. 2, pg. 289)

Thus the reality of rising costs is now clear to us. Our sins have angered our Creator. His punishment has taken the form of rising costs. The solution is to make an effort to rid our society of the sins that are inviting this punishment.

“O Allah, please help me to get an ‘A’. “O Allah, at least let me get a good pass.” “O Allah, save me from failing.”

These are some of the fervent du‘aas made in utmost humility at this time of the year. Many are aspiring for an ‘A’ while others are just praying that they do not fail. Together with fervently praying, thousands of learners burn the midnight oil, sacrifice many leisures and pleasures and toil hard to pass the exams or to excel. Let alone the learners, even their parents and other relatives are praying for their success.

Conviction in Allah Ta‘ala

When something is repeated, it settles deep down in our hearts and we become convinced regarding it. We repeatedly speak of the material world and this has settled deep in our hearts. It is time we beautify and fortify our hearts with the conviction in Allah Ta‘ala.

The one who is convinced that Allah Ta‘ala’s treasures are always full will not be worried and concerned as to what he is going to eat tomorrow. We ask for tomorrow’s food today. However Allah Ta‘ala does not ever ask us for tomorrow’s salaah today.

Everything has been created for us and we have been created for the worship of Allah Ta‘ala. This has to be repeated to the point of conviction, or else we will get consumed with the things of the world and end up forgetting Allah Ta‘ala altogether.

If we are convinced that Allah Ta‘ala Alone decides all matters, then we will remain happy with the decree of Allah Ta‘ala and enjoy ease and peace. Otherwise, due to greed, we will restlessly try for something else and in the process disgrace ourselves, yet we will still only get that what we were supposed to get. How much longer will we be angry with Allah Ta‘ala because our nafs (carnal desires) did not get what it wants? When will we get angry at our nafs for not doing what Allah Ta‘ala wants? Inculcating the right conviction is the simple solution, and it comes with repetition.
