Reality of taqwa (fear of Allah Ta`ala)

PrintE-mail

Hadhrat Umar (Radhiallahu Anhu) had enquired from a sahaabi: “What is taqwa?”

He asked: “Have you ever walked on a thorny path?”

Hadhrat Umar (Radhiallahu Anhu) replied in the affirmative. He then asked him: “And how did you walk?”

Hadhrat Umar (Radhiallahu Anhu) replied: “I gathered my clothing and walked cautiously in order that no thorn would prick my body or my clothing.”

The sahaabi then said that this is taqwa.

A fasting person will see many varieties of food yet he will not dare to taste it out of the fear that he will swallow it and this would then invalidate his fast. However, merely placing something in one’s mouth does not invalidate the fast but this person is still exercises worry and concern.

Similarly, when a girl is proposed, she and her family members become concerned that she should not carry out any action that will displease the boy and his family resulting in the cancelling of the marriage. In the like manner, one should be concerned regarding every aspect of one’s life that there should be no action that will displease Allah Ta`ala and Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). This is taqwa.
