The difference between Israf (extravagance) and Tabzeer (wastage)

PrintE-mail

In reply to a question Mufti Sahib said, “There is a difference between Israf and Tabzeer. To spend more than necessity in those avenues in which spending is permissible is termed as Israf. Allah says in the Qur’an:
كلوا واشربوا ولاتسرفوا
(Eat and drink but do not waste) [7: 31]

Eating and drinking are necessities of life and to spend in them is permissible. So spending extra in them is called israf.

To spend in those avenues wherein spending is not permissible is called tabzeer. Allah Ta`ala says in the Qur’an:

ان المبذرين كانوا اخوان الشياطين
(Those who are extravagant are the brothers of Shaytan.) [17: 27],

because one assists Shaytan by spending in impermissible avenues.
