Reconciling the ahadith pertaining to the sunnat salah of Fajr

Hadrat once said: When a person reaches the masjid when the Jama`at of Fajr has begun then one option is to join the salah without offering the sunnat salah and and another is to offer the two rakaats Sunnah outside the masjid first and then join the salah. If you join then you will have to remain sitting after the salah until the sun had risen a little and thereafter offer the two sunnah of Fajr.

This is because if you offer the sunnat salaah when the jama`at had begun you would be going against the hadith that states:

اذا اقيمت الصلاة فلا صلاة الا المكتوبة
Once the Jama`at begins no salah besides the Fard salah must be offered.

If you don't offer the sunnah salaah then you will be acting contradictory to the hadith that states:

لا تدعوهما و لو طردتكم الخيل
Do not leave them i.e. the sunnats of Fajr even though horses may trample you!

If you offer the sunnat immediately after the Fard salaah then you will be contradicting the hadith that states:

لا صلاة بعد الصبح حتى تطلع الشمس
There is no salah after the fardh of Fajr until sunrise.

Therefore, Imam Abu Hanifah adopted the following method so that the apparently contradictory ahadith may be reconciled: If one will be able to join the Imam in the salah after reading the sunnats, then he should first offer the sunnats of Fajr and thereafter join the Imam. If one will not be able to join the Imam if he offers the sunnats then he should first join the imam and offer the sunnats after sunrise.
