Reconciling between two contradictory ahadith

Question: One understands from the hadith: كنت نبيا و ادم بين الماء والطين (I was a Nabi whilst Adam was still in clay form), that Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam was appointed as a nabi before the creation of Hadrat Adam (a.s). However, it is recorded in the books of seerat and history that Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam received nubuwwat at the age of forty. So there is a contradiction between these two narration.
Answer: Firstly, to establish a contradiction between two entities, both will have to be different in their ijab (being positive) and salb (being negative). In our case both these entities are mujibah (positive). Secondly, if one of them is taken as saalibah (negative) then there are eight factors for establishing contradiction.

One of the eight is 'wahdat-e- makan' (the place must be the same) and this is not found, because the words 'I was a nabi' refer to the alam-e-mithaal (heavens) and Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam receiving nubuwwat at the age of forty is with reference to the worldly life.

Just as there is no contradiction between saying 'Zaid is in the musjid' and 'Zaid is not at home', similarly there is no contradiction between these two narrations.
