Selecting a Shaikh and Understanding our Goals

(Summary of Mufti Ebrahim Salejee’s majlis (Saturday 15th September)

When Abdullah bin Salaam (radhiyallahu anhu) wished to accept Islam, he presented several questions to Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) and explained that he required clarity on several issues before accepting Islam. The reason for this was that if he still had doubts regarding Islam and then accepted Islam, he would not have been able to benefit from Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam).

Likewise, when one wishes to take bay`at at the hands of a shaikh his mind needs to be clear regarding the shaikh, and he has all the right to clarify his doubts. If this is not done then he will always doubt the advices and teachings of the shaikh. This will then become an obstruction in his path of progress. In the same light, the shaikh also has the right to check the mureed before accepting him for bay`at. If he finds him to be incompatible then he should inform him in advance that he does not see him benefitting and thus, he should refer to another shaikh.

We also need to understand our goals and our portfolios. If each person understands and realsies his goal and portfolio then this will save all from a lot of confusion. The best way of understanding our goals and portfolios is to adhere to what our elders and mashaayikh have asked us to do. We should not move beyond the parameters of what they have shown us.
