(Highlights of Mufti Ebrahim Salejee’s majlis - Saturday 21st December)

In order for one’s advice to be accepted by the listener, the bare minimum is that his mind must be clear and free from biasness and prejudice. Just understanding the matter and having confidence is of no benefit if there is no love. Between love and confidence the greater thing is love. If someone’s father is involved in some wrong habit then he may lose confidence in his father but his love will actually increase. The same should be with one’s shaikh. Love and confidence are required. Though there may be some decrease in the confidence, but the love should be ever increasing.

Love comes with allegiance. At times, there is a clash between the love for Allah or Nabi (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and the love for one’s personal benefit and self. This is where the hadeeth applies that one should love Allah more than one’s own self. Who is your allegiance greater to? Love is the thing that capsizes and motivates a person. One should look at his relationship with his wife and children. When mahabbat is in place then everything is easy.

The good which a disbeliever does is suspect, for the question is that who is he doing the good for, since if he does not believe in Allah. Hence, there has to be some agenda behind it.

Nabi (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said that one will be grouped with the people he loves. This is a very weighty statement. The price of love is very expensive. Therefore, one will always be getting tests coming his way to test his allegiance and mahabbat.

A person who has righteousness and virtue in him, not only does he earn rewards from his actions but he also gains through the du‘aas of people when they recite the tashahhud – assalaamu ‘alayna wa ‘ala ‘ibaadillaahis saaliheen i.e. they make du‘aa in favour of the righteous. The opposite will apply for those who do evil and encourage people towards evil.

If the environment one is in is good then to do evil becomes difficult. When encouraging people towards good then look at it from the angle that it is a means of one’s reformation and not to find faults in others. By encouraging others towards righteousness it becomes difficult for one to now go against what he has said.

One can never progress in this path of righteousness if one’s goal is to gain some position and recognition. Instead one should focus on the majesty and greatness of Allah Ta‘ala and gaining His proximity. This is the first step to progress.
