(Summary of Mufti Ebrahim Salejee’s majlis - Saturday 5th December)

Allah Ta‘ala has created this world in diversity. If there is the earth then there is the heaven. If there are the Malaaikah that are spirited to do good and virtue then there are the Shayaateen that are spirited to do evil and vice. If there is adversity then there is prosperity, if there is sickness there is health. When we look all around we will notice that this is the nature of the creation, that there is diversity. It was there from the day the world started. The incident of Haabeel and Qaabeel is quite famous. Now we have a multiple problem before us. One is to recognise and identify the wrong. That is one task and challenge. It becomes a challenge in this day on account of the abundance of evil. Laa yastawil khabeethu wat tayyibu … – wrong and right, purity and impurity cannot be the same though the abundance of wrong may dazzle you. When that wrong reaches a limit then many a time many unwary people get confused that is this right or not.

One common thing is a pre-marital relationship. Because of the abundance of this, people think that there is no problem in this as long as there is a proposal in place, and the parents themselves feel that there is no problem in her dating her fiancé. Because of the abundance, some parents feel that it is alright and some feel that it is not so bad. When this ‘not so bad’ culture starts then you can fit anything and everything in this culture. So in this pre-marital relationship you have a casual conversation, then you have an informal talk, sometimes they are going out for the day or going for tea and coffee. All this is happening and the parents don’t feel that there is anything wrong; and the only cautionary warning they give is that don’t get messed up. They can do everything but not have any intimate relationship. But what do the parents know what they are up to? Hence, what are they giving their blessings for? Therefore, on account of the abundant evil the wrong seems to be right and the right seems to be wrong.

A simple example for the wrong being right is that you got a da’wat and an invitation and you know that there is going to be intermingling, some music and photography. Now you feel to yourself that if I don’t go then the host will feel offended. So he is worried about offending the person but is he worried about offending Allah Ta‘ala by going for the da’wat. A person has taken a loan from someone and went up to his friend telling him that will I be wrong if I don’t pay back the creditor because there is no proof of the loan being given to me. It has not been documented. Hence, legally there is no way that he can get me to pay. So where has this person gone wrong? He has deleted Allah Ta‘ala completely from the equation. The legal system has become his god; the police have become his god. Anything that has to do with the law has become his god. Look at it, when it is legally related, how cautious won’t he be? If for example a person is tipped off that the SARS (South African Revenue Services) have got to know of his ooplang money and they will be there tomorrow morning, will he be able to sleep that night? Even if it is a rumour, will you be able to sleep comfortably for that night. You will be tossing and turning the whole night, you will be thinking that who spied me out to SARS, and the whole night will pass without a peaceful sleep. Why? Because the legal system and judicial system of the country became your god. On the other hand you were told that if you do not perform your esha salaah then this is how you will be punished, if you don’t give your zakaat then Allah Ta‘ala will punish you, but you can still relax and say that Allah Ta‘ala is Ghafoorur Raheem. So it is as though the whole godhood has been restricted to the law. This is the root of the problem, where Allah Ta‘ala becomes secondary and these things become primary. The god has changed. The concern is that anything can happen but legally I must not get implicated. Although you say that you believe in Allah Ta‘ala but this is not the only belief. It is not so much the belief in Allah Ta‘ala, but it is the belief in the might of the law and legal system. Look at how you begin to get confused on account of the abundance of evil. You begin to consider the right as wrong and the wrong as right. A normal person who is invited to a da’wat, is his concern that am I offending Allah Ta‘ala, or is his concern that am I offending my friend? So what is his primary concern? In the words of Hazratjee (rahmatullahi ‘alaih), ‘ye dil shikni ki fikr he lekin deen shikni ki fikr he ya nahi’ – you are concerned about breaking someone’s heart but you are not concerned about breaking deen. See where your mind takes you.

A man can sleep comfortably yet he knows he has to pay that interest or collect that interest. He does not realise that the curse of Allah Ta‘ala is raining on him. But if the SARS is after him, then that will make him restless and sleepless. The hadeeth says that Allah Ta‘ala’s curse is on that man who looks at haraam and on the haraam that is being viewed. Now look, if you are going to be videoing any get-together and there are going to be men and women there and there are hundreds of people who will be viewing the video, and you cannot say that all of those who will view it will not have any dirty and evil feelings, then do you come within the ambit of this hadeeth. Thus the curse of Allah Ta‘ala can rain, that is not a problem, but SARS being behind, that I cannot manage it. The thinking of our buzurgaane deen was totally different.

Shaikhul Hind, Hazrat Moulana Mahmoodul Hasan (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) regarding whom Hazrat Thaanwi (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) used to say that people say ‘Shaikhul Hind’ whereas he is supposed to be called ‘Shaikhul ‘Aalam’ the shaikh and leader of the world – he was such a great personality – he was accompanied by his student Hazrat Moulana Husain Ahmad Madani (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) when he was being taken as a captive to Malta. When the student, Moulana Husain Ahmad Madani (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) saw his ustaaz undergoing this difficulty, he cried and said that at this advanced age, for no fault of yours you are being taken as a prisoner with all this difficulty. The ustaaz smiled and said a statement, and this statement is supposed to be written in our hearts in gold more than on the walls: “Alhamdulillah, ba museebat giriftareim, ne ba ma’siyat” – Alhamdulillah, I can be caught up in some misfortune or sickness or ailment, and not in the transgression of Allah Ta‘ala. Had Allah Ta‘ala wished I could have been gripped in the jaws of a sin and crime, Allah Ta‘ala has not gripped me in the jaws of crime, He has gripped me in some difficulty. Imagine if you were gripped in zina, or interest or your dealings are fraudulent, and you are looking at videos. So as long as Allah Ta‘ala is not displeased it is alright. This thing can come and pass, and the most that can happen is death. But when I know that Allah Ta‘ala is not displeased then it is not a problem. But now what is our concern, it is all about material and the physical self. This is the problem. But when we are caught in some spiritual wrong, interest, fraud, music, then anything can go and we can endure it. One is deen shikni and the other is dil shikni. So are we concerned about whether we are breaking deen? Our whole concern is about people; people have become the god more than Allah Ta‘ala.

Hence, one job will be to identify the wrong because the essence of ‘ibaadat is to abstain from anything that is wrong. Hazratjee (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) used to give an illustration of this. One is a person who has got every problem in his body; sugar, heart problem, gangrene, etc. If you put nice clothing on such a person and adorn him with the best of jewellery, do you think it is the right thing to do? Does it look right on him? On the other hand you have a person with a simple kurta and his organs are well and everything is functioning well but he does not have any outer beauty on him. Which is better? Thus, abstaining from sin is like the person with the healthy body. The jewellery and rubies and pearls are just the extras. And the extras will only look good if the body is good. If the body is not good then you can have all the extras but what is the benefit. The essence of sin is to leave out all those things that you are not clear about because the nature of sin is that once you get into one, you will go into the second and you get more brazen and then you go into the third. First it was the girl’s voice which was sweet and charming. At the second level now you want to go and talk to her. You broke the first limit and said listening to her voice is not so bad. So you went to the second level. From there you then went to third level and began viewing her. So this is the nature of any type of sin, whether it is lustful glances, interest, misuse of the tongue, etc. Thus this is how it works. Once you break the first barrier the second becomes easier to break and when you break the second barrier the third becomes easier to break. So the solution is to nip it in the bud. From the very root you stop it. That is why the Quraan Shareef says, “Lower the glance”, because it starts off from here. If you falter here then you will go to the next point. So nip it in the bud. The one important thing is to identify the wrong. The second need is to put the brakes and resist; that now I am not going to do the wrong. I am not going to take a single step towards it. Once you identify it you leave it out. This principle will apply across the board.

Therefore, if you are going into anything then study it first. If you are going for hajj then study the masaa’il of hajj, otherwise it may be that you broke your hajj and you did not realise it, and you think that your hajj is complete. Therefore, you need to know the do’s and don’ts. So at least learn the obligations; your namaaz, hajj, zakaat. The fourth thing that everybody gets involved in is business. When everybody is involved in it then you cannot say that when I come to the bridge then I will find out. How do you know whether you have come to the bridge already? Therefore, you have to get a broad outline of the business and of the types of business and contracts you normally get involved in and then get an idea of it. After learning about all this, when you come across something you will be able to identify that this is wrong. Look at Nooh (‘alaihis salaam); he is begging Allah Ta‘ala on behalf of his son, that my son is part of my household and You have promised me that I can embark the ship with my household. Allah Ta‘ala says that he is not of your household because household refers to the one that has brought imaan. Hence, despite being the nabi, Nooh (‘alaihis salaam) until that moment in time did not realise that household refers only to that person who has imaan. So if he did not know something until Allah Ta‘ala had pointed it out to him, then how can we claim to be cleverer than a nabi and say that we already know it. Immediately he comes to his senses and repents to Allah Ta‘ala saying that I ask for maaf and forgiveness for asking of things that I have no knowledge of. So it is possible that you may do something unknowingly, but ignorance is not an excuse. It may be that you are getting married, so you need to know the dos and don’ts of marriage. You are getting into a business so you need to know the dos and don’ts of business. Many a times you get a person saying that I have a partner in the business and the terms of the agreement are that he will get 5 percent of the investment amount every month and at the end of the investment period he will get back his initial capital input. Now this is pure interest whereas he felt to himself that he was conducting a halaal partnership. You know how to get into the business and how to make that money, but how to save yourself from the displeasure of Allah Ta‘ala, that you conveniently did not want to learn. This will apply to everything of your life. Even if it comes to building a house, you will need to find out from the ‘Ulama. The in-thing nowadays is to have an open plan, but this is a zina plan. You will be looking at that person’s wife and he will be looking at your wife. We don’t know that it is haraam and we feel that Islam does not provide guidance so we can do as we want. We can splash money and do as we want. But have we asked? We feel that it is my wealth so I can do as I want, but who gave you that wealth? Who sent those clients to the shop? It is Allah Ta‘ala that did it. Just see how you have become arrogant and bloated with pride. All that Allah Ta‘ala is asking of us is to find out whether it is right or wrong.

As the struggle for the truth will rise, the struggle for falsehood will also rise. Both will happen at the same time. It is the system of the world. Falsehood is not going to sleep. This is actually a blessing of Allah Ta‘ala because this will make us concerned and we will be careful. If it had gone to sleep you will be relaxed and you will sit back. So now you are making an effort for your security and the security of your wife and children. Look at Hazrat Ebrahim (‘alaihis salaam), he is living in the midst of the Kuffaar. He was born and brought up among them. Then Allah Ta‘ala grants him nubuwwat, he could see that they were involved in wrong and being appointed as a nabi he needs to make his stance clear. He cannot play a double role. Hence one of the first things that he did was that he said to his father and people that I break away from what you worship and I have nothing to do with it. Why did he need to make this proclamation? The reason is obvious. When there is a wrong that is taking place and you are in its midst and you are not showing any type of aversion then people will misconstrue it and feel that you are part of it. If it was wrong then why did he not speak against it? This shows that it is permissible. The unwary think in this manner that when the elders have remained silent then it must be right. So that person who is considered as the elder, he needs to clear himself from it. But our minds tell us that if we have a very strong stance then how are we going to continue with our life. We will lose business opportunities. If you are in a crowd that is consuming wine then you need to break away from them and tell them that when they are over you will return. Although you may have come for business you cannot say that your business means so much to you that you cannot part from them. You need to proclaim what is your stance. Otherwise you will create a confusion and people get confused. They will feel that even if he speaks against it but when he is still sitting with them then this means that it is not so bad. It is like a group of people who are robbing and cheating. Will you want to sit with them? No, because you will then be counted to be from them. If there is a terrorist organisation then you will not want to be seen with them because you will be counted from them. In the worldly sense we understand this. So in the spiritual sense we need to clear it up before Allah Ta‘ala that we are not part of the wrong doers.

The stance of Ebrahim (‘alaihis salaam) was so strong that he made it a statement that was to endure in the progenies to come. So he was not concerned of himself only but also for the progeny to come. He wanted to pass it on to them. We get angered if someone does not come for the function. Because he did not attend your invitation you get angered and upset, but for the interest and all the other wrongs that he is involved in do you get upset with that? So we are only worried about our personal things. We understand from Ebrahim (‘alaihis salaam) that our duty is double fold. We have to firstly get it right and then keep it as a legacy for our progeny. For material security how much don’t we do. We send the child to kindergarten and then to school and then to college for tertiary education, but for their deeni security how much have we done? If the child comes late to the shop we will bring the roof down and say that you are so disobedient to your father. But if we see that the same child did not wake up for fajr then do we explain to him that he has done a wrong. So we have assumed a position as if we are greater than Allah Ta‘ala. Look at how defiant we have become. He can break the command of Allah Ta‘ala but he must not break your command. This was not only the way of Ebrahim (‘alaihi salaam). It was also the way of Yaqoob (‘alaihi salaam). At the time of his death he asks his children as to whom will they serve after he passes on? If it was one of us we will ask which clients will you serve? If we have only this worldly concern then after one or two generations this deen will be lost. If material is our concern then this will also be their concern. Allamah Sha’raani (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) writes that for material security we do so much for our children, we allow them to take 15 – 17 years but if the child takes long for his hifz we will say that he is wasting his time. So he says that for their deeni security we should be diligently taking out time daily and making du‘aa to Allah Ta‘ala that, O Allah, make their islaah and reform them. Keep them right on the straight path.

For a jalsah there is so much preparation. In Mia’s farm Hazrat Hafiz ‘Abdur Rahmaan Mia Saheb (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) was such that when I compare his sincerity to what we do then I feel ashamed, though he was not a formal ‘aalim as such. On a Thursday night the style was that we would read a bit more durood shareef. If there was any student to complete his hifz, the khatam will take place after that and Hafiz Saheb would make a du‘aa. Sometimes there would be one guest and sometimes no guests, and the next day it would be back to normal with dhor and sabaq dhor. So he was emphasising on us that don’t put your mind into these things otherwise your goal will be just the showpiece. Then the more surprising thing is that if a nephew or relative is completing his hifz then planeloads will go just to attend the jalsah. The most we can say is that if we do not go then they will feel bad, but what was the deeni benefit in going. Someone asked that why are the ladies jamaat programs not discouraged, whereas the ladies jalsah programs are discouraged. The answer I gave is that look at the ladies jamaat program, provided that it is being done according to the guidelines laid down by the elders and conducted by some of the senior ladies, you will see the cash effect of it that your wife, etc. will come before time on to the musalla and they will be more obedient to you. On the other hand the outcome of these jalsahs is that when they come back the effect is that she will begin comparing her abaaya to the other one’s abaaya and her shoe, etc. She will say that my daughter needs to give a bayaan like that girl and sing a nazam like that girl. So did the essence and true colour of deen rub on to them or not. Sometimes I have to go to these jalsahs because there are a lot of girls that are coming there who have come from the extreme end and the fast lane, and they have to be gradually brought on to the path and explained that their original place is the home, not the shopping malls and halls.

The women say that they have to go shopping because you do not know what are their toiletries and other things. But I ask you, that did your grandfather hold hands with your grandmother and go to the malls to get her toiletries or was she a different woman. The women that were then are the same as the women now. They all are the same with the same needs, but what is the need now in the 21st century that she has to go out of the home to get these things. So why do you change? If the woman comes right, then at least 70 – 80 percent of the problems will come right because the man says that if I don’t do the wedding like this then she will get upset. A woman has a lot of power and clout in her. There must be a reason for the hadeeth to say that a woman can influence even an intelligent person. Hence, when she comes right then the whole house will come right. The husband wants to do it right but he needs her cooperation to get it right.

Coming back to the aspect of diversity; when there is so much of negative propaganda then it happens that after many years it surfaces that it was a farce and orchestrated, but in the meanwhile their propaganda is working. They have an agenda and to legitimise the agenda they will have to do something. So they needed to kill 200 or so of their own people in order to legitimise the killing of two million, etc. They have no concept of aakhirah and Allah Ta‘ala, so they can do anything to get to their own ends. But then we fall into their propaganda and accept it. What does it do to an average Muslim? He begins thinking that all Muslims are like this and wherever we are we are causing problems and why can’t Muslims be decent; and he begins to become despondent of deen and have negative feelings of Islam. So they do this to create a certain mind-set.

Hazrat Mufti Mahmood Saheb (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) used to quote Bernard Shaw that he said that Islam is the best religion and Muslims are the worst of people. So his first statement was a bribe for you to accept the second part. A normal person will think that when such an intelligent person is saying that Muslims are the worst then what is the use in being a Muslim? But the question is that if Islam was the best religion according to him then why did he not accept Islam? It is like a person who has got the money and says that Mercedes Benz is the best car, but he is driving an old broken down Toyota. So if he has the money then why doesn’t he buy the Merc? Thus, these people have to rundown Islam, but in a sophisticated way. So they are not as innocent as they make themselves seem to be.

Before we read any book, check the credentials and background of the author. If we do not know him then leave it out. A Jew had written an entire thesis on Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas‘ood (radhiyallahu ‘anhu). So this kitaab was written by a Jew in very flowery language and he was quoting all authentic ahaadeeth regarding Abdullah bin Mas‘ood (radhiyallahu ‘anhu). But then the question arises that what business did this Jew have in writing on this great Sahaabi? So we are reading anything and everything and we are not worried whether it is misleading you or not. At the end this person added just one statement that Ibnu Mas‘ood used to fabricate ahaadeeth. Now all that he had written before was in order to buy you out and get you to accept this final statement. Once you accept it you will lose your confidence in this Sahaabi and once you lose confidence in the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) then you have broken your link with Nabi (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).
