Jubair bin Nufair (rahimahullah) narrates:<\/p>\n
On one occasion, a group of people praised \u2018Umar (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) saying, \u201cBy Allah! We never saw a man who dispenses justice, speaks the truth and is more severe upon the hypocrites than you, O Ameerul Mu-mineen! You are the best of people (from the Sahaabah) after Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam)!\u201d<\/p>\n
Hearing this, \u2018Auf bin Maalik (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) objected, \u201cYou have not spoken the truth! By Allah, I have seen another man who is actually the greatest (from the Sahaabah) after Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam)!\u201d When the people asked \u2018Auf (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) who this person was, he replied, \u201cAbu Bakr (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu).\u201d<\/p>\n
\u2018Umar (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) then said, \u201cBy Allah! \u2018Auf (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) has spoken the truth and you have lied! Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) was more fragrant than musk (i.e. he already possessed imaan and excelled in Deen) while I was still astray and more misguided than my family\u2019s camel (as Abu Bakr [radhiyallahu \u2018anhu] had accepted Islam a few years before \u2018Umar [radhiyallahu \u2018anhu]).\u201d\u00a0(Manaaqibu \u2018Umar bin Khattaab [radhiyallahu \u2018anhu] libnil\u00a0Jowzi\u00a0[rahimahullah] pg. 141)<\/p>\n
Lessons:<\/strong><\/p>\n 1. Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) is the best of all the Ambiyaa (\u2018alaihimus salaam), and the best person after the Ambiyaa (\u2018alaihimus salaam) is Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu), followed by \u2018Umar (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu).<\/p>\n 2. No matter how great a person may become and what heights he may reach, he should never attribute any greatness or virtue to himself. Rather, he should follow the example of \u2018Umar (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) by always thinking nothing of himself and everything of his seniors.<\/p>\n
