During the era of the khilaafah of Sayyiduna \u2018Uthmaan bin \u2018Affaan (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu), the value of a single date palm had reached one thousand dirhams (silver coins).<\/p>\n
Despite the value of the date palm, Sayyiduna Usaamah bin Zaid (radhiyallahu \u2018anhuma) went to one of his date palms, pierced the trunk and hollowed it out by extracting from it the \u2018heart of palm\u2019 (a vegetable harvested from the inner core and growing bud of certain palm trees. In this case, extracting the heart of palm caused the entire tree to be destroyed.). Sayyiduna Usaamah (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) then gave the heart of palm to his mother to relish and enjoy.<\/p>\n
Observing that Sayyiduna Usaamah (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) had destroyed the tree, the people asked him, \u201cWhat caused you to do this when you are aware that the value of a date palm has reached one thousand dirhams?\u201d Sayyiduna Usaamah (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) replied, \u201c(The reason is that) my mother asked me for this, and my mother will not ask me for anything, which I am able to acquire, except that I will (obtain it and) give it to her.\u201d<\/p>\n
(Al-Mu\u2019jamul Kabeer – Tabraani #370)<\/em><\/p>\n Lesson:<\/strong><\/p>\n Islam teaches us that after Allah Ta\u2018ala and Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam), it is our parents who have the greatest rights over us. Hence, a Muslim will do his utmost to bring happiness to the hearts of his parents and see to their comfort and wellbeing. Thus, in the incident above, Sayyiduna Usaamah (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) was even prepared to sacrifice his valuable date tree in order to fulfil the wish of his mother and bring happiness to her heart. On the contrary, in today\u2019s times, parents have been ignored and neglected, or even dumped and abandoned in old age homes, so that they will not become a \u2018hindrance\u2019 and obstacle to our comfort and lifestyle.<\/p>\n
