\u2018Amr As-Saraayaa (rahimahullah) related that on one occasion, he was travelling alone through Roman Territory. While he was asleep one day, a Roman disbeliever approached him and shook him awake with his foot. He then challenged him to a fight, giving him the choice of how they would engage: with spears, with swords or by wrestling.<\/p>\n
\u2018Amr (rahimahullah) replied that both spear-fighting and sword-fighting would leave no survivor, and thus he chose wrestling. The man dismounted, swiftly overpowered \u2018Amr (rahimahullah) and sat upon his chest. He then asked him how he wished to be killed.<\/p>\n
It was at this crucial moment that \u2018Amr (rahimahullah) remembered to make du\u2018aa. Lifting his gaze towards the sky, he supplicated to Allah Ta\u2018ala, saying:<\/p>\n

You see the condition that I am in, so grant me relief.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n He then lost consciousness. When he regained awareness, he found the Roman lying dead beside him.<\/p>\n Ishaaq (rahimahullah), one of the narrators of this incident, mentioned, \u201cI put it into practice myself and taught it to others, and they found it beneficial. And this is genuine sincerity (i.e. turning to Allah Ta\u2018ala alone, with no reliance on anything else).\u201d<\/p>\n (Al-Faraj Ba\u2019dash Shiddah \u2013 Ibnu Abid Dunya #64)<\/em><\/p>\n Lesson:<\/strong><\/p>\n A believer facing hardship possesses a special \u201cweapon\u201d that is always at his disposal. No matter how severe the trial may be, the weapon of du\u2018aa remains ever accessible. On one occasion, Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) said, \u201cShould I not inform you of something that will save you from your enemies and increase your sustenance? Turn to Allah in du\u2018aa during the night and day, for indeed du\u2018aa is the weapon of a believer.\u201d\u00a0(Abu Ya\u2019laa \u2013 Majma\u2018uz Zawaa-id #17153)<\/em>. \u2018Amr As-Saraayaa (rahimahullah) found himself in a situation from which escape appeared impossible. Yet, through turning sincerely to Allah Ta\u2018ala, he was granted divine assistance. Hence, we too should strive to cultivate conviction in du\u2018aa and make it a constant practice in our lives.<\/p>\n
