Hazrat Shaikh Moulana Muhammad Zakariyya (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) once mentioned:

A hundred years ago, people understood the true value of deen and showed importance to deeni knowledge. During that era, deen was alive within the home and it was as though every home was a small madrasah (wherein the knowledge of deen would be imparted to the children). As a result, when people came to learn of the madrasahs that were opening, they flocked towards them and were eager to benefit from them. A hundred years has now passed since that era, and during this time, the influence of the English in India has gradually caused people to lose interest in the madrasahs, maktabs and the khanqahs. Hence, the need arose to go to the home of each Muslim to once again rekindle the  enthusiasm and spirit of deen. (Suhbat Baa Awliyaa pg. 211)
