Hazrat Moulana Muhammad Ilyaas (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) once mentioned the following:
It is important and necessary for one to ensure that one is fulfilling the laws of sharee‘ah that are directed to him at all times. This will happen when a person is constantly concerned about fulfilling what Allah Ta‘ala wants from him at every moment.
For example, when a person engages in fulfilling any work or responsibility, then prior to engaging in that work, he should realize that engaging in that work causes him to be focused towards it, but at the same time, it causes him to be unmindful of other works and responsibilities.
Hence, he should understand that being concerned at all times about fulfilling the commands of Allah Ta‘ala which are directed to one requires that one does not become unmindful of the other works and responsibilities that are directed to him at that time. It should not be that he is engaging in one work, but is unmindful of another duty which is more important and incumbent upon him at that time.
Without a person being constantly concerned of what Allah Ta‘ala wants from him at all times, he will not be able to fulfill the commands of Allah Ta‘ala directed to him at all times.
(Malfoozaat Hazrat Moulana Muhammad Ilyaas (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) pg. 39)
Note: The abovementioned malfooz applies to many situations, among which are the following:
1. A person attends a waleemah function, and due to him being occupied in eating, he forgoes performing salaah with jamaat in the masjid.
2. A person’s parents are ill and require his service, but he does not remain in their service due to him going on a holiday trip or going for ‘umrah.
3. Due to being occupied in his business, a person forgoes performing salaah with jamaat in the masjid.
