Hazrat Moulana Muhammad Ilyaas (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) once mentioned the following:

Tajweed (i.e. reciting the Quraan Majeed with the correct pronunciation) is an important aspect of Deen which is taught to those who come out in the path of Allah Ta‘ala for Tableegh. It is extremely important for one to recite the Quraan Majeed correctly. The hadeeth states, “Allah Ta‘ala does not listen to anything (with such pleasure) as He listens to a Nabi who recites the Quraan Majeed in a beautiful manner.”

In reality, “reciting the Quraan Majeed in a beautiful manner” refers to reciting with tajweed, in the manner in which Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) would recite the Quraan Majeed (and how he had taught the Sahaabah [radhiyallahu ‘anhum] and the Ummah to recite), until this way of reciting has been passed down through the centuries till it reached us.

However, the amount of time that is required in order to correctly learn tajweed is not generally found when going out in jamaat. Hence, during the time when people are out in jamaat, an effort should merely be made to impress upon the people the importance of tajweed and get them to realise its importance. Thereafter, when they feel motivated and encouraged, they themselves will see the need to take out special time for going to someone in order to learn tajweed.
