Hazrat Shaikh Moulana Muhammad Zakariyya (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) once mentioned the following:

Our pious seniors, such as Hazrat Moulana Gangohi, Hazrat Moulana Raipuri, my beloved uncle (i.e. Hazrat Moulana Muhammad Ilyaas Kaandhlawi), Hazrat Moulana Husain Ahmed Madani [rahimahumullah], etc. – all of them continued to make zikr bil-jahr (i.e. loud zikr) until the very end of their lives, even after they had become great Mashaayikh.

When they would be asked as to why they would still make loud zikr, they would say, “That action which was the means for us reaching where we reached – how can we leave it out?”

It is for this reason that the Mashaayikh of Tasawwuf mention that the ma’moolaat (i.e. the daily prescribed zikr) which one receives from his Shaikh, one should try his level best to complete it daily.
