Hazratjee Moulana Muhammad Yusuf Kaandhlawi (rahimahullah) once mentioned:
This Ummah was built in this manner (in the time of the Sahaabah [radhiyallahu ‘anhum]) that each person’s loyalty was not based on his family relationship, his friendship with any person, his affiliation with his party or tribe or town, or the people who spoke his language. Similarly, no person would look at his wealth, property, wife and children (when it related to the matters of Deen). Rather, the only thing that mattered to each person was to see what was the command of Allah Ta‘ala and His Rasul (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) in any given situation.
The Ummah will only become united when they can forego every relationship in their lives which opposes the commands of Allah Ta‘ala and Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).
When the Muslims were united (in the time of the Sahaabah [radhiyallahu ‘anhum]), then if any Muslim was killed in any place, all the people would be greatly affected over the killing of that Muslim. Now, our condition is such that hundreds and thousands of Muslims are being slaughtered (in different parts of the world), yet we are not affected in the least.
