Qaasim (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), the son of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) passed away in infancy whilst still being suckled by his mother Sayyidah Khadeejah (radiyallahu ‘anha). Due to her natural motherly love and compassion for her child she said to Nabi (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam): “My bosom is still filled with milk for him. How nice it would have been if he was first weaned off before passing away.” To console her Nabi (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied: “Arrangements for his breastfeeding have been made in Jannah.” Khadeejah (radiyallahu ‘anha) said: “I was unaware of that.” Nabi (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) mentioned: “If you so wish, I will supplicate to Allah Ta‘ala who will make it possible for you to hear Qaasim’s voice.” At this she replied: “There is no need for that, for I have (more) conviction in what Allah Ta‘ala and his Rasool (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) have mentioned (than in what I perceive through my senses).” (Sunan Ibni Maajah #1512)
Lesson: The only safe option for a blind person is to follow one who can see. In terms of the Aakhirah, and with regard to what is the route to success in this world and the next, we are all blind and Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) is the one who can see. Therefore we should “blindly” follow in his footsteps and be one hundred percent convinced that what he has said is the reality. Khadeejah (radiyallahu ‘anha) has given us this beautiful lesson from her spontaneous response.
