Once ‘Uthmaan bin ‘Affaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) purchased an orchard from a person. After agreeing on the price, ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) said to him: “Give me your hand” (as it was their practice that whenever they agreed on a transaction, they would shake hands in order to confirm it). When the seller saw the hand of ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), he said: “By Allah, I will not sell it to you until you give me 10 000 dirhams (silver coins) more (than the agreed price).”
‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) turned to ‘Abdur Rahman bin ‘Auf (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and said: “I heard Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) saying: ‘Allah Ta‘ala shall admit into paradise a person who is easy-going, whether he is a seller, a buyer, a person paying a debt or claiming it.’”
‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) then said to the seller: “Here, take these 10 000 dirhams so that I may be eligible for these words which I heard from Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).” (Al-Mataalibul ‘Aaliyah #1335)
Lesson: Most of us are aware of what is right and wrong and also repeatedly hear about the virtues of good actions and the harms of evil. However, the important ingredient that we lack is conviction in the words of Allah Ta‘ala and His Rasul (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). If we have firm conviction, we will be prepared to forgo all our rights in order to secure the great virtues that they have promised for good character, forgiveness, overlooking the faults of others, etc. Otherwise we will literally fight for every cent.
